Premier League Predicted Starting XI: West Ham
Find below all the details on how we think West Ham will lineup this season. This is subject to change based on new signings and pre-season friendly data, of course.
West Ham Predicted Starting Lineup: Graphical View
With another campaign to come with European Football, West Ham are looking to bring in recruitments. Mark Noble's retirement, in addition to Fredericks and Yarmolenko leaving as free agents leaves them light in terms of depth in central midfield, and up-front with Antonio the sole striker. Bowen and Benrahma have deputised there, but this has been more of a stop gap for European competitions. The Hammers have brought in striker Gianluca Scamacca from Sassuolo who has a big reputation coming from Italy and could take the striker role with Antonio shifted into a slightly deeper role, wide or centrally. As things stand that central attacking midfield role was shared between Benrahma, Lanzini and Fornals last season, with Fornals and Bowen favoured on the wings. With Antonio shifted deeper, we will likely see Benrahma as the first to lose his place, with Moyes preferring the work rate of Fornals.
Another signing West Ham have been heavily linked with is Filip Kostic from Eintracht Frankfurt, who can operate at either left wing-back or further forward in the left wing role. In central midfield, Rice and Soucek have the spots nailed down, with new signing Flynn Downes to provide cover. In defence, Nayef Aguerd has been brought in to partner Zouma at centre back but has unfortunately sustained an injury that will likely put him out until October. In pre-season, after Aguerd's injury we saw Craig 'CMFD' Dawson slot in, so he's looking the most likely to partner Zouma at the start of the season, with Ogbonna and Diop as back up. The full-back spots should be taken by Cresswell and Coufal, but Johnson got plenty of minutes on either flank last season due to injury and poor form, particularly from Coufal, so it could be an interesting battle for the right-back spot this season. Masuaku has joined Besiktas on loan for the season, so they are looking light in terms of back up there unless someone like Kostic is brought in.
If the Kostic signing does go through we could potentially see a switch to a back 5 which Moyes used a reasonable amount in the 20/21 season. In this scenario, it's likely Cresswell would be moved to LCB again with Kostic operating at LWB. We could then see Antonio and Bowen flanking Scamacca in the forward role, leaving Fornals, Benrahma and Lanzini as more rotation pieces.
