Premier League Predicted Starting XI: Manchester City
Find below all the details on how we think Manchester City will lineup this season. This is subject to change based on new signings and pre-season friendly data, of course.
Manchester City Predicted Starting Lineup: Graphical View
Pep roulette is probably the hardest thing to predict in modern day football. Hopefully the predicted XI is his "first choice", but do expect a lot of shifting, rotation, and early subs from especially the City players, but attackers especially. Predicting the back line "should" be easier. I can say with confidence that Ederson, Ruben Dias, and Joao Cancelo should start 33+ games if they are healthy enough to. John Stones and Aymeric Laporte are battling it out for the last CB spot, and it remains to be seen who will be the favourite this season. Kyle Walker right now should be the right back, but if Cucurella signs expect him to play LB, with Cancelo at RB, and Walker providing rotation depth.
In the midfield Rodri will be the starting CDM, and has shown he can offer sneaky MID3/4 fantasy value by popping up with some attacking returns. Expect De Bruyne to be the chief creator once again in the midfield three, with Bernardo taking up a similar #8 role as last season. Kalvin Phillips was bought this summer, and will provide Rodri with much needed rests during the season. Don't be surprised if you see some games where BOTH Rodri and Kalvin are in the XI. In this instance, unless Bernardo is injured I would expect him to get a start somewhere in the false three, because I fully believe he is Pep's go to "utility" man. Jack Grealish might be able to get some minutes in the midfield three as well, but don't expect many if any starts in those roles, those minutes should mainly come from bench appearances with the 5 sub rule in place.
The front three will be led by new #9 Haaland, but don't expect 38 league starts from the new striker. When Haaland rests I would expect to see one of Foden/Bernardo as the false 9 or potentially some minutes through the middle for Alvarez, or even Delap if he stays at the club this summer. On the wings I expect Mahrez and Foden to see majority of starts at least to start the season. I do expect a lot of rotation on the wings, and both wings rarely seeing 90 minutes with the 5 sub rule. Be mindful of that when drafting any Manchester City winger/forward. Cole Palmer, Jack Grealish, Julian Alvarez, and Bernardo will all get wing minutes and potentially some starts there as well. It remains to be seen how often Pep will rotate with the increase in the subs allowed, but with the World Cup, and a compact schedule, you should look to draft some City "backups" for when your superstars are not in the XI.
