Premier League Predicted Starting XI: Everton
Find below all the details on how we think Everton will lineup this season. This is subject to change based on new signings and pre-season friendly data, of course.
Everton Predicted Starting Lineup: Graphical View
Aside from picking up James Tarkowski from Burnley on a free transfer, Everton have yet to dip into the transfer market so far this summer. The squad narrowly escaped relegation last season, in large part due to the heroics of the now-departed Richarlison. While the club is known to have financial issues, it would still be very surprising if the Toffees do not reinvest any of the £60m transfer fee they received from Tottenham for their Brazilian striker. But this has yet to transpire, so at the time of writing I’m left to speculate on how the current squad will take to the pitch in 22/23.
Manager Frank Lampard, who arrived mid-way through the 21/22 campaign, found some success playing with a wingback setup towards the end of the season. And despite expressing his preference for a four-at-the-back formation, he is likely to persist with the system his returning players are most familiar with to begin the season. The club is badly in need of reinforcements, not only at the top of the pitch, but also in the central midfield positions, with Fabian Delph leaving at the expiry of his contract at the end of June and an injury to Allan further limiting Lampard’s options in the middle of the park.
I expect an eventual shift to Lampard’s preferred 4-3-3, once the current crop of players and any new acquisitions have time to be coached up on the specifics of their manager’s first-choice system. If the 4-0 pre-season loss to Minnesota United, where Lampard trialed a move to the 4-3-3 setup, is any indication, though, it may be a long while before he trusts them to live up to his expectations. Check out his scathing review of their performance if you want further evidence of his frustration.
The front three of DCL, Gray and Gordon should be secure starters in either system barring new signings or their own departures. But behind them is a different story. From the remaining group, I only feel confident in Pickford, Tarkowski and Mykolenko being “nailed-on” starters when fit. It’s best to leave the other players until very late in the draft, if you plan on picking them up at all.
Editor's Note - 7/28: News is breaking that Everton are yet again raiding Burnley, this time for Dwight McNeil. The midfielder's impending arrival likely means Demarai Gray won't be the starter on the left flank for long. Additionally, the Toffees have signed former Wolves fullback Ruben Vinagre on loan. Vinagre will likely compete with Mykolenko for the starting role at LWB.
