Premier League Predicted Starting XI: Chelsea

Find below all the details on how we think Chelsea will lineup this season. This is subject to change based on new signings and pre-season friendly data, of course.

Chelsea Predicted Starting Lineup: Graphical View

There are currently a lot of question marks over the incomings and outgoings at Chelsea. Lukaku got his wish with a loan move back to former club Inter Milan, while both Alonso and Azpilicueta have been linked with moves to Barcelona. Add in the outgoings of Rudiger and Christensen on free transfers and Chelsea have been looking light in the defensive positions particularly. To address this, Kalidou Koulibaly has been signed from Napoli and he should occupy one of the three centre-back spots with Thiago Silva. Chelsea are also working on deals to bring Jules Kounde from Sevilla or Presnel Kimpembe from PSG to further strengthen this position. However, as it stands, the RCB role could be shared between Azpilicueta, Chalobah and James. Levi Colwill had an impressive season on loan at Huddersfield, but will likely be transferred/loaned out again leaving Sarr as the main backup at LCB. Barring any further injuries, Chilwell and James should make the wing-back spots their own, with Alonso or Emerson (if Alonso leaves) providing backup at LWB, and plenty of rotation options to back-up James at RWB including Azpilicueta, Hudson-Odoi, and even Loftus-Cheek.

The central midfield two is as you were with Kante, Jorginho, and Kovacic but with the addition of Connor Gallagher coming off the back of a stellar loan spell at Crystal Palace last season. Chelsea have strengthened their forward options with the signing of Raheem Sterling who can play anywhere in the front 3 positions, with Mount and Kai the most likely combination unless any new signings arrive. Chief backups will be Pulisic, Werner and Ziyech (who is looking the most likely to leave) and they could see plenty of minutes in rotation. Armando Broja had a reasonably successful spell on loan at Southampton last season and if he doesn't make a similar loan move this season he could offer an option in the centre-forward role.

Tuchel has experimented with 4-3-3 in pre-season, with Mount moving into the more advanced position of the 3 in midfield. However, given the struggles he's appeared to have in this system, as soon as a new centre-back is signed it's more than likely he'll keep to the tried and trusted 3-4-3 formation.
