Premier League Predicted Starting XI: Brentford
Find below all the details on how we think Brentford will lineup this season. This is subject to change based on new signings and pre-season friendly data, of course.
Brentford Predicted Starting Lineup: Graphical View
Thomas Frank found some late-season success when he made the switch from a 5-3-2 to a more attack-minded 4-3-3 formation. The Bees will likely retain this system for the majority of matches in the upcoming season. While Frank has enough depth in the center of defense to go with a 3-man backline - with Kristoffer Ajer stepping into the starting lineup - it’s the addition of left wing starlet Keane Lewis-Potter for a club-record fee that reinforces the continuation of the formation that was used at the end of last season.
Brentford’s summer reinforcements have been solid additions in positions in which there was little to no competition last year. David Raya’s presence was sorely missed when Alvaro Fernandez deputized, but he should face much stiffer competition for the number one role with the arrival of Thomas Strakosha from Lazio. Raya should have enough quality to retain the starting spot for this season, at least. Aaron Hickey and the aforementioned Lewis-Potter will be expected to make their respective right back and left wing roles their own, though they may be eased in (particularly in the case of KLP given Yoane Wissa’s form at the end of last season). The most secure starters across both a 4-3-3 and 5-3-2 setup are Raya and the fullbacks highlighted below, as well as Christian Norgaard, Bryan Mbeumo and Ivan Toney further up the pitch. Expect considerable rotation in the two remaining central midfield positions, as was the case prior to Christian Eriksen’s arrival in January.
Editor's Note - 7/22: In light of a pre-season injury to Ethan Pinnock and the fact that Kristoffer Ajer is still on his way back from hamstring surgery, Brentford have brought in Ben Mee from Burnley. Mee should slot in for Pinnock to start the season, and could contest for a long-term starting role in defense depending on how he performs.
