Brighton Best Fantasy Players
As noted above, these are the Best Brighton Players for the Fantrax Fantasy EPL platform. We analyze the Seagulls' top three prospects ahead of the new season, with an estimated draft pick for each player.
Leandro Trossard
Position: Midfielder
21/22 Points: 327 (15th best midfielder)
21/22 Points Per Start: 10.5 (31 starts)
22/23 Projected Points Per Start: 10.2 (32 starts)
Recommended Draft Pick: 49-60 (12 Team League: Round 5)
Overview: Turned it on near the end of last season, and still managed a sound 10.5 points per start even with numerous cold spells and benchings throughout the campaign.
Despite the above narrative regarding Trossard's struggles (he averaged 3.8 points per game in the 11 game stretch from Dec. 1 to Feb 26), Trossard will continue to provide value at his ADP. Last year, you might have drafted him in the 5th or 6th round and he ended up as the 31st overall point scorer. This year, he's likely to be drafted closer to his actual value. This shouldn't scare fantasy managers away from the Belgian, though. Brighton are abuzz when Trossard is in form and that's certainly not lost on Potter. Unlike some of his colleagues, the Belgian didn't see much rotation, getting the starting nod in 32 of 38 games. Potter moved him around positionally from striker to winger to wing back, but Trossard performed admirably across the pitch and will likely again be the first offensively-inclined player on Brighton’s team sheet next season.
But take heed that the aspect of Trossard's game that will disappoint those who roster him will be his ghost points. At 7.1 ghost points per start, he ranks in the 69th percentile in this category. This certainly isn’t abysmal by any means. But Trossard, strangely has a way of disappearing for certain matches, putting in a near-anonymous fantasy performance. And in most others, if he's not netting a goal or assisting on one, chances are he's ending the week with a modest score. Trossard is a classic example of a role-player on your fantasy team. Draft him in the right spot. Do not overpay. And think about trading him out on a high as soon as he smashes it once.
Marc Cucurella
Position: Defender
21/22 Points: 293 (10th best defender)
21/22 Points Per Start: 8.4 (34 starts)
22/23 Projected Points Per Start: 8.5 (35 starts)
Recommended Draft Pick: 73-84 (12 Team League: Round 7)
Overview: An incredibly talented left back putting up stellar, yet somehow under-the-radar numbers. If he stays in Brighton, he's sneaky value.
From April 1 to the end of the season, Brighton played 9 matches. Of those nine, they kept a clean sheet in 4 of them. I mention this because Marc Cucurella played 90 minutes in all of these matches and averaged a staggering 11.6 fantasy points per game. Add to this the fact that he only had two negative scores the entire season in matches against United and City. Because of his efforts this past year, there's a strong chance we'll have to retract this portion of the article when he secures a big-bucks transfer away from the South Coast.
For the moment, let's pretend that he stays. Let's harken back to his 42 key passes (6th among all defenders), his 62 tackles won (the most of any defender in the league), and his 28 accurate crosses (2nd behind Trent). These are ridiculous numbers and, more importantly, they equal fantasy points if you're playing with Fantrax Default Scoring. In short, Cucurella is the real deal. Let's all pray that he stays put for another season rather than relocating to a rotation calamity.
Pascal Gross
Position: Midfielder
21/22 Points: 257 (33rd best midfielder)
21/22 Points Per Start: 10.4 (23 starts)
22/23 Projected Points Per Start: 9.9 (24 starts)
Recommended Draft Pick: 73-84 (12 Team League: Round 7)
Overview: A previously solid, reliable fantasy asset whose play time has been trending in the wrong direction. Draft him only if you have more consistent options on your roster to offset his playing time uncertainty.
Let's get one thing straight: it's not Gross's performance numbers that have us worried about him as a fantasy asset. Last year, he averaged 10 points per start with 8.1 ghost points per start. Though this number puts him just one above Trossard's 7.1 gPPS, it lands him in the 81st percentile for the category. Gross is certainly dependable when he plays And set piece involvement often gives him one of the best floors of any MID. That's why fantasy managers like him. However, in the 20/21 season, he played almost 400 more minutes than in 21/22, averaged 9.2 ghost points per game, and had a PP90 (points per 90 minutes) of just under 12.
So what changed? Well, it's said that "a fickle heart is the only constant in this world." Change "heart" to "Graham Potter," and I would absolutely agree with this sentiment. I submit into evidence the fact that Pascal Gross started only 24 matches last season, despite having no injuries. He did have a single bout of COVID, but that only accounted for one game missed. Of the matches that he started, he played 75 minutes or more in only 17 of them. As mentioned, we're trending in the wrong direction with Gross. He’s another year older, at 30 years old, and Brighton have a growing collection of quality midfielders, though Bissouma‘s departure without a proper replacement could help Gross’s playing time. Add to that the nightmare fantasy football scenario that will ensue by allowing Potter 5 subs, and it's enough to sufficiently scare us off of Gross. So why is he in the best players article? Welcome to Brighton.
