Find below all the details on how we think Aston Villa will lineup this season. This is subject to change based on new signings and pre-season friendly data, of course.
Aston Villa Predicted Starting Lineup: Graphical View
Coming into Steven Gerrard's second season, few EPL lineups are harder to predict than Aston Villa's. Many areas are solidified - fullbacks (a key position in this system), center backs, and defensive midfield are all set - but the left side of the midfield and most of the attacking positions are up for grabs. Digne and Cash are nailed on at LB & RB, Mings mostly at LCB, McGinn as right-sided central midfielder, Coutinho as a #10 or left-sided attacking midfielder, and Watkins as a striker or left-sided forward. New signings Kamara & Carlos come in straight away at holding midfielder, a coveted position/signing for the manager, and right-sided center back, respectively.
The rest depend on how Stevie G sets up & rotates, and if any further big signings come through the door. Ings will start as one of two strikers with Watkins, as a lone striker with Watkins on the left, or he'll be on the bench. Buendia can play right wing or fill in for Coutinho as a 10. Bailey can play either wing position or as a second striker. In the midfield, if Douglas Luiz departs as expected, Ramsey may fight it out with a new signing for the left-sided central midfield role. In short, there are a lot of questions, as mentioned above. This makes it difficult to value many of these assets, particularly Ings, Buendia, Bailey, and Ramsey. They could be nailed on, benched, or super subs. One or two of them will prove to be fantastic value in the draft - but which lotto ticket will hit big is anyone's guess.
